Hippo: The Story Behind the Name
The nickname "Hippo" dates back to Chris Chase's freshman year of high school. Chris wanted to play football, but his father wouldn't let him. Instead, he tried out for the tennis team and made it. In the 1980s, most tennis players were tall and lean—think John McEnroe—but Chris had the build of a football player.
After winning his very first high school tennis tournament in Hutto, Texas his coach, Jim Anderson, jokingly gave him a new nickname on the ride home: "Hippo Chase." The name stuck.
Throughout high school, every time Chris won a tournament, the announcers would call out, "Hippo Chase!" over the schools’s intercom. Before long, everyone knew him by that nickname.
Years later, around the same time the Chase brothers were preparing to open Barons Creek Vineyards, his coach had passed away. At his funeral, Chris walked into the church and noticed people turning around. He could read their lips as they smiled and said, "Hippo." In that moment, he realized the nickname had come to represent much more than tennis. It represented lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and the coach who had such a positive impact on his life.
When it came time to name some of our very first wines, Hippo was an obvious choice.
