Cabernet Franc: The Star Behind Our New 2024 Velvet
When people think of the world’s great wine grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon often steals the spotlight. But did you know one of its parents deserves just as much recognition?
Meet Cabernet Franc—one of the most versatile and influential grape varieties in the world.
Cabernet Franc traces its roots to the Basque region of southwest France before rising to prominence in the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu introduced cuttings to the Loire Valley. From there, it spread throughout Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where it became known as “Bouchet” and earned a reputation for producing elegant, expressive wines.
Its influence on the wine world doesn’t stop there.
Modern DNA research has revealed that Cabernet Franc naturally crossed with Sauvignon Blanc in the 1600s near Bordeaux to create Cabernet Sauvignon. It is also one of the parent grapes of Merlot and Carménère, making Cabernet Franc a true cornerstone of many of the world’s most celebrated red wines.
A Grape That Thrives Almost Anywhere
One of Cabernet Franc’s greatest strengths is its versatility. It performs beautifully in cooler climates, producing bright, fresh, fruit-forward wines like those found in France’s Loire Valley. In warmer regions, it develops richer fruit, more body, and incredible complexity while still maintaining its signature elegance.
That adaptability is exactly why we love working with it.
The Heart of Our 2024 Velvet
As we release our 2024 Velvet this month, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on the grape that makes this blend so special.
With 55% Cabernet Franc, Velvet showcases everything this remarkable variety has to offer. Cabernet Franc provides aromatic lift, vibrant red fruit, floral notes, and the smooth, velvety texture that inspired the wine’s name. It creates a wine that is elegant, approachable, and layered with complexity.
The remaining blend—Petite Verdot and Malbec—adds depth, structure, and richness, creating a beautifully balanced wine that is both refined and expressive.
The Perfect Bridge Wine
If you’ve ever found yourself deciding between a lighter Pinot Noir and a bold Cabernet Sauvignon, Velvet is the perfect middle ground.
Its balance of fresh fruit, silky texture, and structured finish makes it an incredibly versatile wine for both new and seasoned wine lovers.
Even better, Velvet is one of our most food-friendly wines.
