The Texas wine industry continues to grow, and with it comes fresh talent ready to elevate the Lone Star State’s winemaking reputation. One of the latest additions to the Texas wine scene is Sam Jennings, a seasoned winemaker with a passion for crafting exceptional wines. In December 2024, Sam officially joined the Barons Creek Vineyards family, bringing his extensive experience and unique approach to our winemaking team.
A Journey from Coast to Coast
Sam’s path to winemaking was anything but traditional. Originally studying sociology in college, he unexpectedly found his way into an enology lab during a harvest season in Washington state—a decision that changed his life. The experience ignited a deep appreciation for winemaking, leading him to pursue formal education through Washington State University’s extension courses while gaining hands-on experience at wineries across the country.
From Washington to Pennsylvania, Connecticut to Minnesota, Sam’s career has taken him to wineries both big and small. His travels have also brought him to Europe, South America, South Africa, and Asia, where he explored winemaking techniques that continue to influence his craft today.
A Texas-Sized Opportunity
In July 2021, Sam made the move to Texas, initially joining Bingham Family Vineyards as their Head Winemaker. Texas’ emerging wine industry intrigued him, offering the challenge of working with warm-climate grape varietals and helping shape the future of Texas wines.
Now, as he steps into his new role at Barons Creek Vineyards, Sam is excited to continue showcasing the potential of Texas terroir. His expertise in small-batch winemaking, blending, and vineyard management aligns perfectly with Barons Creek Vineyards’ commitment to quality.
Beyond the Cellar
When he’s not crafting wines, Sam enjoys fishing, restoring old cars, and cheering on the Seattle Seahawks and Mariners. He now resides in Texas with his wife Amanda, embracing the state’s hospitality and vibrant wine community. His favorite wine style? A well-balanced Viognier—bold, aromatic, and expressive, much like his approach to winemaking.
